Nach etwa 5 Stunden Fahrt erreichen wir den Gardasee. Es ist noch früh am Tag und so halten wir für eine Kaffeepause in dem Ort Limone. Dort finden wir eine schöne Uferpromenade mit zahlreichen Kaffees und Restaurants. Die ersten Geschäfte öffnen schon ihre Pforten und Auslagen. Es ist dann nur noch halbe Stunde Fahrt nach Tignale und wir finden auch schnell unser Hotel, wo allerdings zu so früher Stunde noch kein Zimmer für uns bereit ist. Dafür geniesen wir den wunderschönen Ausblick von der Hotelterasse über den ganzen See und das Schneebergpanorama.
Schließlich beziehen wir ein schönes Zimmer mit Balkon und Seeblick. Den restliche Tag verbringen wir in und um das Hotel zur Eingewöhnung. Der Tag schließt mit einem guten Abendessen mit Freunden, die schon einen Tag früher angereist waren.
Limone.
Am nächsten Morgen starten wir zu viert zu einem Ausflug nach Limone, um dieses schöne Städtchen etwas genauer kennenzulernen. Limone ist mit seiner Altstadt, die sich die steilen, weißen Felshänge des Dosso dei Roveri hinaufzieht, einen Besuch wert. Im Sommer einen Parkplatz zu finden, ist allerdings ein seltener Glücksfall. Von der neuen Anlegestelle am Südende führt die Dorfgasse zum Porto Vecchio. Das alte Hafenbecken wird umrahmt von blumengeschmückten Häusern. Souvenirgeschäfte und Lokale säumen den Weg zur zentralen Piazza Garibaldi. Laubengänge wiederum mit Läden und Restaurants führen bis hinauf zur barocken Pfarrkirche San Benedetto direkt an der Gardesana. In ihr sind mehrere Altäre mit schönen Marmor-Intarsien zu sehen.

It takes about 5 hours to reach lake Garda. Since it is quite early we stop in the town of Limone for a stroll and a cup of coffee. We find a nice strech along the lake shore with many coffee shops and restaurants. The first souvenier shops just open up. From Limone it is a short trip to Tignale where we quickly find our hotel. However, at this early time there is no room ready for us. Thus we enjoy the hotel terrace with its marvellous panoramic view across the whole lake and to the snowcapped mountains.
Eventually we move into a nice room with balkony and a grand view of the lake area. We spend the remaining day in and around the hotel. The tiring and long day ends with a nice dinner with our friends, who had arrived a day earlier.
Limone.
The following day we visit once more and together the town of Limone to get to know it a little better. Limone, with its Old part of town, that nestles underneath the steep, white rock-hillsides of the Dosso dei Roveri, is worth a visit. In the summer time it is a rare stroke of luck to find a parking place. From the new landing place on the South end, the village alley leads to Porto Vecchio (old harbor). The old Harbor-basin is framed from flower-decorated houses. Souvenir-businesses and pubs line the way to the central piazza Garibaldi. Arcades stores and restaurants lead up to the baroque parish-church San Benedetto directly at the Gardesana. Inside there are several altars with beautiful marble-inlay.

Salò
Am folgenden Tag beschließen wir beim Frühstück einen Besuch in Salò. Wir benötigen weniger als eine Stunde mit dem Auto. Die geschützte Lage am Golfo di Salò macht das 10 000-Seelen-Städtchen zum wärmsten Ort am See. Das schätzen bereits die Römer, und die Venezianer erhoben Salò 1426 zum Hauptort ihrer Provinz am Lago. Leider wurde der Ort im Herbst 1901 durch ein Erdbeben fast völlig zerstört. Immerhin kam Salò so zu einer Seepromenade, und die historischen Gebäude wurden vorbildlich restauriert. Die Stadt hat zwischen ihren beiden Renaissance-Toren Erfreuliches zu bieten. Der spätgotische Dom S. Maria Annunziata ist der größte der Region, mit Marmorportal an der unfertigen Fassade, einem schönen Kuppelfresko, mit barocken Seitenkapellen, einem Altarbild von Romanino und einem beeindruckend expressiven Kreuz des deutschen Künstlers Hans von Ulm, der im 15. Jh. in Torri del Benaco lebte. An der Piazza della Vittoria steht der venezianische Palazzo del Podestä, das alte Rathaus aus dem 14. Jh., daneben der Palazzo della Magnifica Patria mit dem Museo Civico, das Funde aus dem römischen Gräberfeld bei Lugone zeigt.

Salò.
Next day during breakfast we decide to visit Salò. It takes less than an hour by car to get there. The protected situation at the Golfo di Salò makes the 10 000-soul-small town the warmest place at the lake. Already the Romans valued this, and the Venetians made Salò in 1426 the main-place of their province at the Lago. Unfortunately, the place was almost totally destroyed by an earthquake in autumn of 1901. After all, Salò established a sea-promenade, and its historic buildings were restored perfectly. Between its two renaissance gates the city has much to offer. The late-Gothic cathedral S. Maria Annunziata is the biggest of the region, with marble-portal at the unfinished facade, a beautiful dome-painting, with baroque side-chapels, an altarpiece of Romanino and an impressively expressive cross of the German artist Hans of Ulm, who lived in the 15. century Torri Del Benaco. At the piazza della Vittoria stands the Venetian Palazzo Del Podestä, the old town hall from the 14. century, beside it the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria with the Museo Civico, which shows findings from a roman burial ground near Lugone.

Malcesine
Heute wollen wir Malcesine besuchen. Dazu fahren wir wieder nach Limone und setzen dann mit dem Schiff über zur anderen Seite des Sees. Malcesine versteht es, sich ein wenig vom Massentourismus abzusetzen. Das ist dem 3500-Seelen-Ort mit der malerischen Altstadt anzusehen, der seinen venezianisch geprägten Charme erhalten konnte. Trotzdem oder gerade deswegen ist die Fußgängerzone in der Altstadt vor allem im Juli und August recht voll. Die meisten Touristen zieht es direkt in das sehenswerte Castello Scaligero mit seinen drei verschachtelten Innenhöfen und Museen. Ruhiger, aber nicht weniger schön ist der Palazzo del Capitano direkt am See, mit einem netten, palmenbestandenen Innenhof, wo sich auch Einheimische in der Bar eine Pause gönnen.

Malcesine.
Today we want to visit Malcesine. We take the car to Limone and use a people-ferry to cross to the other side of the lake. Malcesine understands it to avoid a little the mass tourism. You can see this by looking at the picturesque old town which was able to conserve its venetian charm. Nevertheless or just because of this the pedestrian-zone is quite busy in July and August. Most tourists are attracted directly to the Castello Scaligero worth seeing with its three complex inner courtyards and museums. More quietly, but no less beautiful is the Palazzo Del Capitano located directly at the lake, with a nice inner courtyard with palm trees, where also natives take time-out in the bar.

Direkt vom Hotel weg führt ein steiler Fahrweg hinauf nach Gardola, dem Hauptort der Gemeinde Tignale. Von dort geht es relativ eben an Straßen entlang bis zum Fussweg, der uns zuerst bis zur Wallfahtskirche Madonna di Monte Castello in 700m Höhe leitet. Nach kurzer Besichtigung der Kirche und einem Capuccino wandern wir weiter bis zum Gipfel des Monte Cas (779m) mit phantastischen Ausblicken unterwegs und dort oben. Hinunter gehen wir dann auf der vom See abgewandten Seite auf einem schmalen Pfad zurück zur Straße nach Gardola.

A steep road takes us directly from the hotel up to the town of Gardola, the main part of the community of Tignale. We follow the streets until we reach the foot path which takes us up to the pilgrimage church Madonna di Monte Castello. We briefly look into the church, drink a Capuccino and continue to hike up to the summit of Monte Cas (779m). There are several places along the way with gorgeous views of the lake and the mountains.
